Starting Out
During the initial year of training, the program is designed to develop the physician's confidence in clinical diagnosis, pathophysiology and medical treatment of disorders of the kidney, urologic abnormalities, hypertension, and disorders of body fluid physiology in newborns, infants, children, adolescents and young adults. This experience includes therapy of
- acute renal failure and end stage renal disease, including hemodialysis,
- continuous hemofiltration,
- peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation.
The training and experience includes selection, performance and evaluation of procedures -- including the renal biopsy -- necessary for morphologic and physiologic assessment of renal disease. An educational lecture series for renal diseases and disorders which is established and provided in conjunction with the adult Nephrology Section at the University of Cincinnati Department of Internal Medicine is spread over a two-year period of time.
Additional documentation of experiences in dialysis, renal transplantation, biopsies, urologic abnormalities and the treatment of disorders of the kidneys is recorded by the fellows during their service rotation, reviewed by the division and/or program director at scheduled periodic intervals during the training program and summarized in a report developed at the end of each year of the training program.
At the monthly scheduled meeting between the pediatric nephrology fellows and the program director, the needs of meeting the curriculum in combination with clinical experience and national guidelines are assessed to achieve satisfaction of specific goals and objectives.
