Typical Clinical Experiences

During the initial year of fellowship in pediatric nephrology, the primary emphasis is on the clinical training program where the fellow spends six months on the in-patient service and three months on the dialysis service. During this time, they also attend the Nephrology clinics which occur on three mornings of the week.

The full-time faculty member is always available and makes daily rounds with the trainee. The remaining three months of the initial year of fellowship are available for clinical electives such as Critical Care, Urology, Pathology or Adult Nephrology/Dialysis. Instruction and clinical problem solving beyond the defined lectures is obtained informally by interaction with the full-time faculty members in the daily care of patients with ward rounds being made twice daily.

For a typical month, there are weekly outpatient clinical care conferences, monthly dialysis patient care conferences, twice-monthly clinical pathologic review of cases and a weekly clinical case teaching discussion with the full-time faculty. The trainees also participate in nephrology division research conferences.

Cincinnati Children's is a quaternary through primary pediatric health care center with a vast group of sub-specialty training programs. The fellow has numerous opportunities to relate to other training programs for additional clinical and research education and practical experiences.
