Research Facilities

Cincinnati Children's currently offers more research space than any other pediatric facility in the nation: nearly 600,000 square feet. This research area comprises five buildings -- including a dedicated research building that was most recently expanded in the Fall of 2000 -- close to patient care facilities and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

In the summer of 2004, Cincinnati Children's started an ambitious construction project to expand its dedicated research space. Rising from the site of the former Children's Hospital building is a new 13-story research tower. This state-of-the-art building will house approximately 415,000 square feet of research and office space, and expand our total research space to nearly a million square feet when it is completed in 2007.

What Is Available to Researchers

  • Access to shared Core Resource Facilities
Students have access to Children's Core Support Capabilities and Facilities. These core support capabilities are resources that are available for all researchers and students at the Research Foundation. Core resources for basic and clinical research enhance investigators' access to cutting-edge technology and data analysis for a wide variety of projects.
  • Research Materials at Your Disposal
Researchers at Cincinnati Children's are able to use two scientific research libraries: the Cincinnati Children's Pratt Library, and the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine library system. Between the two libraries, access is provided to all major medical and scientific journals. In addition, each library has an extensive compilation of journals accessible online, often with subscriptions that allow you to them.
  • Electronic Infrastructure
All postdocs have access to computing facilities while at Cincinnati Children's, including workstations, high-speed Internet connections, and email accounts. In addition, the Division of Biomedical Informatics provides computational resources for such tasks as data processing and analysis.

UC Facilities

Since Cincinnati Children's is the home of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Nephrology fellows have access to UC's many resources.

  • UC College of Medicine
UC's Medical Sciences Building, one of the largest research-teaching structures under one roof in this country, houses extensive state-of-the-art research facilities, including research laboratories, core laboratories, and a full-service medical library.
  • Vontz Center for Molecular Studies
The Vontz Center provides a place for scientists to focus on the discovery and understanding of the underlying genetic and molecular mechanisms that contribute to the development and progression of diseases such as cancer, brain and nervous system disorders, diabetes and obesity. The Vontz Center also houses many core facilities for researchers at the UC Medical Center.
  • Genome Research Institute
UC's Genome Research Institute allows scientists to apply state-of-the-art modern molecular technologies to understand disease processes. Current major focus areas are obesity/diabetes, vascular biology, metabolic diseases, and cancer. The Institute houses over 350,000 square feet of world-class laboratories, cutting-edge technology core laboratories, and animal housing facilities.
  • Hoxworth Blood Center
