Fellow Evaluation Process
Program Evaluation
The full-time faculty of the Cincinnati Children's Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship are committed to a process of continuous quality improvement concerning the educational effectiveness of the program.
To this end, educational goals and specific needs of the fellow are explicitly discussed even prior to matriculation. Thus, a process of goal setting as well as a strategy to achieve those goals is laid out.
During the fellowship, quarterly review sessions are conducted with the fellowship director in order to assess the overall effectiveness of goal achievement and educational value of the rotation just completed.
During these same quarterly review session written evaluation of the program and pertinent faculty members is completed by the fellow.
Fellow feedback is discussed as part of biweekly Faculty Administration Meetings as an agenda item, and appropriate alterations / additions to the fellowship are implemented.
Fellow Evaluation
The full-time faculty of the Cincinnati Children's Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellowship are also committed to a process of continuous quality improvement concerning the education of Pediatric Orthopaedic Fellows.
To this end, faculty expectations and role delineation of the fellow is explicitly discussed even prior to matriculation. The fellow's perception of their own strengths and weaknesses as they relate to Pediatric Orthopaedics is recorded, as are faculty member's perceptions of the same.
During quarterly review sessions during the fellowship, the answers to these same questions concerning strengths and weaknesses are elicited, compared, and contrasted to earlier responses.
The pertinent faculty member also completes written evaluation of the fellow after completion of each three-month rotation.
The results of these written evaluations are discussed with the fellow by the Program Director during their quarterly review session. Record of these evaluations and review sessions are kept on file in the fellow's permanent record within the Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery.
Failure to meet appropriate clinical performance standards may result in the following:
- If the fellow is not meeting the previously discussed minimum performance objectives, he / she will be counseled and this will be documented in writing.
- If performance remains unsatisfactory, the fellow will be placed on probation and options for remedial training discussed.
The duration of probation will be at the discretion of the Fellowship training director, but will not normally exceed six months. This will be documented in the fellow's file.
- The decision for dismissal will follow divisional discussion. The dismissal will be by the Division Director after consultation with the chairman of Pediatrics and the Fellowship Training Director.
Dismissal of fellows will conform with the Cincinnati Children's personnel policy for employee dismissal. This plan is designed to respect the resident / fellow's rights, allow due process and the opportunity for a grievance, if appropriate.
