Educational Resources

The pediatric orthopaedic educational resources available to Orthopaedic Surgery fellows at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center are extensive and comprehensive. They are divided into the following categories:

  1. Library resources
    Audio-visual resources
    Computer / slide resources
  2. Research facilities
  3. X-ray teaching files

Library Resources

Library resources include the University of Cincinnati Medical Library, the Pratt Library at Cincinnati Children's, the Cincinnati Medical Heritage Library, the Main Orthopaedic Library adjacent to the Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinic, and the Supplemental Orthopaedic Library / Conference Room within the Orthopaedic Office.

The two most extensive of these library facilities are the University of Cincinnati Medical Library with its 61,958 books and 2,081 active journals, and the Pratt Library with its 4,000 books and 260 active journals.

Audio-Visual Resource

The centerpiece of the audio-visual resources available to the fellow is the syllabus and slide set "Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery" authored by Alvin H. Crawford, MD, FACS, which includes 21 chapters and 1,001 slides.

Additional audio-visual resources also include the orthopaedic videotape library, the Alvin H. Crawford Musculoskeletal Tumor Teaching file / slide set, and interactive video tele-conference surgical sessions that take place several times each year.

Computer / Slide Resources

The computer and slide resources available to the pediatric orthopaedic fellow include 24-hour access to the orthopaedic computer learning center (including Internet access); 24-hour access to MEDLINE computerized literature search facilities in Pratt Library, and CD-ROM based tutorials on both (1) normal, and (2) pathological gait.

Photographic and slide resources are available through the department's in-office high-resolutions scanner, digital palate, and slide presentation computer programs. Each fellow has an individual budget from within the department of orthopaedic surgery for film and slide developing services.

X-Ray Teaching Files / Educational Resources

Two x-ray teaching files are available to the fellow:

  1. The Alvin H Crawford Musculoskeletal Tumor Teaching File located within the Department of Orthopaedics
  2. The Silverman Library X-ray Teaching File located within the Department of Radiology.

The Silverman Teaching File includes over 500 extremity and 100 spine-related pediatric teaching cases. In addition to this orthopaedic x-ray rounds are conducted twice a week and monthly orthopaedic x-ray grand rounds.
