Pulmonary Medicine

Clinical Training

Inpatient Experiences

The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has two inpatient services. The main service is responsible for all of the hospitalized patients who have cystic fibrosis (usually eight-12 patients) and other non-cystic fibrosis pulmonary patients (one-two patients). The Transition Care Center service is responsible for patients with chronic pulmonary diseases (five-12 patients) who are often tracheotomy- and ventilator-dependent. Pediatric pulmonary fellows make daily rounds on their patients each day with the attending pulmonologist on service. Pulmonary fellows on the main service are also responsible for inpatient hospital consultations. Over 300 inpatient consults are performed annually by the Division of Pulmonary Medicine, exposing the trainees to a wide variety of pulmonary diagnoses and complications.

Outpatient Experiences

Pediatric Pulmonary subspecialty residents maintain a Continuity Clinic of their own during their entire subspecialty training. This Continuity Clinic is usually held one-half day per week, every week. The subspecialty fellow is paired with an attending pulmonologist for each year of training. This arrangement provides better continuity of care to the patients and to the training of the pediatric pulmonary fellow.

Flexible Fiberoptic Bronchoscopy

The number of flexible bronchoscopy procedures performed by our Division has increased to over 1000/year, providing great opportunity for fellows to become proficient at this procedure. The fellows spend dedicated months on the Bronchscopy Service, enabling them to have concentrated experience in performing bronchoscopies, often with Robert Wood, MD. In addition, Dr. Wood organizes and teaches an international 4-day "Pediatric Bronchoscopy Course," which all Cincinnati Children's pediatric pulmonary fellows attend.

Pediatric Sleep Center

Our Sleep Center is dedicated to children. Among them are patients with cystic fibrosis who can be carefully evaluated for nighttime alveolar hypoventilation. Nasal BiPAP therapy can be initiated and titrated. The lab conducts over 1200 polysomnograms per year. Raouf Amin, MD, Narong Simakajornboon, MD, Barbara Chini, MD, and Maninder Kalra, MD, are all diplomats of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. All fellows are encouraged to spend a minimum of one month on a Sleep Medicine elective.

Cystic Fibrosis Center

The Cystic Fibrosis Center, part of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, offers a team approach to the treatment of children with cystic fibrosis.
