Pulmonary Medicine

Conferences

Fellows in the Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center attend the twice weekly Pulmonary Fellows Conference Series, during which core topics related to cystic fibrosis and pediatric pulmonology are presented. There is also a Physiology lecture series and PFT Lecture series. The pulmonary fellow and attending on the main inpatient service conduct daily Inpatient Rounds with the general pediatric residents who follow patients with Cystic Fibrosis.

The fellow on the main pulmonary inpatient service presents patients hospitalized with cystic fibrosis at the weekly Cystic Fibrosis Team conference, with all members of the cystic fibrosis team contributing to the management of patients with cystic fibrosis,  helping to ensure the best possible care. At this conference, there is continual quality improvement efforts and debate regarding appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures. Complications and the psychosocial aspects of chronic pulmonary disease as they affect the pediatric patient and patient's family are discussed. The Cystic Fibrosis Data Conference is held twice per month and brings together basic, translational and clinical cystic fibrosis researchers from Cincinnati Children's and the University of Cincinnati research communities and clinicians from the Cystic Fibrosis Care Center. This conference provides a forum for "cross-talk" between those conducting research and those caring for patients with cystic fibrosis, and helps to bring clinically relevant issues to the forefront of basic and clinical research efforts.

Among other educational opportunities offered throughout the medical center, there is a mandatory "Ethics and Research" course and a GCRC curriculum covering various aspects of research involving human subjects:

  • Study design
  • Biostatistics
  • Outcomes research
  • Presenting / writing skills
  • Funding opportunities
