Rheumatology

Clinical Work

For the clinical portion of the Rheumatology Fellowship program, all patient visits, and inpatient rounds are closely supervised. There is a gradual delegation of clinical responsibility to each fellow, but with great emphasis on continuity of care, given the chronic nature of most of the rheumatic diseases. During the second and third years of training, fellows are required to attend a minimum, on average, of one half-day clinic per week for continuity. During this time, they also have the opportunity to attend outreach clinics once a month in Toledo, Ohio, with Thomas A. Griffin, MD, PhD, and Hermine I. Brunner, MD, MSc. In addition, the pediatric fellows work on the inpatient / consultation service in adult rheumatology for one month a year. The fellows also participate in various conferences.

In 1987 Cincinnati Children's made a commitment to develop pediatric rheumatology a focus of research excellence. With the support of the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, a laboratory-based research program was started by David N. Glass, MD, director of the division, while Daniel J. Lovell, MD, continued to build expertise in clinical studies.
