Sleep Medicine Fellowship Overview

The Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is an ACGME-approved graduate medical training program which features strong clinical and research emphasis. The fellowship is a two-year program, with ACGME accreditation for the first (clinical) year. The fellowship offers diverse clinical training in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, and focuses extensively on the management of pediatric patients with a variety of sleep disorders, including but not limited to:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Central sleep apnea
  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleep disorder breathing secondary to chronic medical conditions
  • Behavioral and psychological sleep disorders
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Parasomnias
  • Insomnia
  • Sleepwalking
  • Periodic Limb Movement Disorder and Restless Leg Syndrome

The first year of training will be predominantly dedicated to acquiring the knowledge and experience in clinical sleep medicine. Six weeks during the first year will be dedicated to research. During this period, the fellow will identify the area of research that will be conducted during the second year. The second year will be devoted to research; however, the fellow will attend one outpatient clinic per month to maintain clinical skills. In addition, the fellow will interpret sleep studies for a period of four hours per month. The first-year curriculum also includes formal rotations in neurophysiology, ENT, psychiatry and adult sleep medicine.

Objectives

The Sleep Medicine Fellowship is designed to provide excellent clinical training in pediatric sleep medicine and to lay a foundation for training your physicians who plan to pursue an academic career in this subspecialty. The program leads to subspecialty certification by the American Board of Pediatrics in Sleep Medicine.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an MD or DO degree from an accredited institution, completed an ACGME-accredited residency in pediatrics, neurology, internal medicine or psychiatry, and must be an active candidate for certification or certified by the corresponding American Board. Applicants must also be eligible for licensure by the State Medical Board of Ohio.
