To maintain an active lifestyle, active individuals and athletes have specific health care needs. Primary care physicians trained in sports medicine are able to meet the health care needs of the majority of both active and inactive individuals. In addition to more extensive training in musculoskeletal injuries, sports physicians are trained to prevent, diagnose and manage many medical problems in athletes and active individuals, with a primary goal of maintaining safe athletic participation. Fellows will be trained with the following general goals in mind:

  • Gain excellence in managing the health needs of competitive and recreational athletes of all ages, gender and abilities
  • Understand the role of the active individual/athlete within the community, or team
  • Understand the beneficial role of regular exercise in the treatment and prevention of injury and illness
  • Develop a team philosophy for managing health care problems and injuries in athletes: and to understand the role of the team physician as the "Captain of the ship," in the care of athletes
  • To be an ambassador for primary care sports medicine: be able to think, speak and write clearly about a broad range of sports medicine topics

To achieve these goals, sports medicine fellows will spend time in three major rotation types during the academic year. The foundation of the curriculum will be longitudinal experiences, working on a daily basis with the sports medicine faculty. In addition, the fellows will serve as a team physician for 2-3 teams during the year. They will also continue to develop their primary care skills while working within an established primary care practice in the area. Developing research skills throughout the year will also be emphasized, as fellows will be asked to make many didactic presentations on a variety of subjects and will be required to do some form of scholarly research during the year.
