Overview

The Pediatric Urology Fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is an accredited, two-year training program consisting of a clinical first year and a research-based second year.

The Urology Fellowship is specifically oriented toward preparation of the trainee for pursuit of an academic career in Pediatric Urology.

One fellow is accepted to the program every other year. Appointment to this position is secured through the Pediatric Urology Fellowship Program coordinated by Edmond T. Gonzales, Jr., MD.

The fellow's clinical responsibility will ensure that he / she has the opportunity to follow the entire course of managing urologic disease:

  • Initial examination of the patient (either in the Emergency Department or Outpatient Services)
  • Determining which interventions are appropriate
  • Follow-up of the patient during hospital admission and on return to clinic

All major areas of Pediatric Urology will be covered, with sufficient training in the surgical management of urologic problems including:

  • Minimally invasive and endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery
  • Genitourinary reconstructive surgery for epispadias, hypospadias (including microscopic surgery) and bladder exstrophy
  • Diversion / undiversion for complex urological problems
Training in gender assignment for the treatment of intersex disorders will also be provided.

Didactic teaching conferences include weekly lectures, bi-weekly Radiology conferences, a monthly basic science conference, a monthly journal club and a monthly directed reading conference.

The next Pediatric Urology Fellowship position begins July 1, 2006. The deadline for receipt of application is February 2005 and interviews will be conducted shortly thereafter.
