Overview
Applying Genomics in Nursing Practice (5-week offering) Teacher facilitated online course with weekly assignments. 21.25 nursing contact hours will be awarded to nurses who participate in an entire course and complete all related assignments and evaluations.
Assignments
Participants should plan to spend a minimum of six (6) hours each week to complete assignments. These assignments will involve readings, independent learning activities and online group discussions. Assignments are designed to give participants plenty of practice at using genetics in clinical practice situations.
Registration
Registration for the upcoming sessions is open. Sessions will run from:
- May 29 - July 3, 2009 - (orientation begins May 25th), $400
- September 25 - October 30, 2009 - (orientation begins September 21st), $400
Registration is limited to the first 25 nursing registrants.
Course Objectives
- To review common genetic terms
- Identify the relevance of genetics and genomics to nursing practice
- Recognize pedigree symbols and biologic relationships in pedigrees
- Identify patterns of inheritance displayed in pedigrees
- Demonstrate ability to elicit a minimum of three-generation family health history information
- Construct a pedigree from collected family history information using standardized symbols and terminology
- Recognize factors that influence the interpretation of patterns of inheritance in a pedigree
- Identify clients who may benefit from specific genetic and genomic information and/or services based on assessment data
- Identify credible, accurate, appropriate, and current genetic and genomic information, resources, services, and / or technologies specific to given clients
- Facilitate referrals for specialized genetic and genomic services for clients as needed

Contact hours will be awarded to nurses who participate in an entire course and complete all related evaluations.
