The Genetics Education Program for Nurses (GEPN) at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center provides the following frequently asked questions and answers about the Independent Self-Paced Modules:
What do I do if I encounter problems submitting a test or survey from a PC?
There are a few reasons that can make it difficult for you to submit a test or survey from a PC. We'll use a process of elimination.
To make sure that your web pages are loaded from our server each time, please follow the instructions
below:
- Open Internet Explorer
- From the tool bar left click on Tools
- Left click on Internet Options
- Left click on the General Tab
- From the section that says Temporary Internet Files, left click on Settings
- Confirm that Every Visit to the Page is selected
- Left click OK to close the Temporary Internet Files window
- Left click OK to close the Internet Options window
Your PC must be equipped with Java Virtual Machine (JVM), as submitting a survey or test is performed by a java applet. To check for your JVM, please follow the instructions below:
- Open Internet Explorer
- From the tool bar left click on Tools
- Left click on Internet Options
- Left click on the Security Tab
- Left click on Internet to highlight
- At the bottom of the window, left click on Custom Level
- Scroll down to Microsoft VM. Confirm that High Safety is selected.
- Continue scrolling to Scripting of Java applets. Confirm that Enable is selected.
- Left click OK to close the Security Settings window
- Left click on the Advanced Tab
- Scroll down to the Microsoft VM. Confirm that the JIT compiler for virtual machines is selected.
- Left click OK to close the Advanced window
- If your computer does not have Microsoft VM, visit http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html to download java from Sun.
To confirm that your computer does not view our course as an untrusted site, please follow the instructions below:
- Open Internet Explorer
- From the tool bar left click on Tools
- Left click on Internet Options
- Left click on the Security Tab
- Left click on Trusted Sites to highlight
- Left click on Sites
- In the box where "Add this web site to the zone" is stated, add the following url:
http://morpheus.chmcc.org:7777/ - Left click on Add
- Left click on OK to close the Trust Sites window
- Left click on OK to close the Security Settings window.

The scrollbars aren't showing on my screen. What should I do?
It is necessary to maximize the pop-up windows (external websites) by left clicking the small square in the top right corner of the window. After maximizing the window, scrollbars will appear.

Will the Independent Self-Paced Modules run properly on my Mac?
The self-paced modules will run on a Macintosh with the following specifications:
- Mac OSX 10.3 or higher
- Latest version of the Safari browser 1.2.4
- Java 1.4.2_05 or higher
If your Macintosh meets the above specifications and you are unable to proceed in the course, please complete
the next two functions:
- Check for software updates
- In Safari, click on "reset Safari" and delete your cookies and temporary internet files

What are the printable margins for the Independent Self-Paced Modules?
The margins of the module may exceed the printable margins of your browser. You can change your browser printer default to print in landscape in order to print the page in it's entirety.

Will the Independent Self-Paced Modules run on any browser and / or wireless connection?
It is strongly recommended that when using a wireless internet connection, use Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. There are known functionality issues with WebCT, Netscape and Mozilla browsers.
