NSG 299-01 Selected Topics in Nursing: Genetic Diseases

Course Description
Selected Genetic conditions will be introduced by audiovisuals, discussion, and written reports. The course is appropriate for anyone wishing to be able to identify specific genetic conditions.

None. Internet sites will be used for current information.

Course Objectives
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Define common terms used in genetic study.
  2. Identify one genetic site on the Internet.
  3. Discuss characteristics of several Genetic conditions.

Grading Scale
Grades will be assessed by the following parameters:

    Written report: 20%
    Attendance: 50%
    Class Participation: 30%
    A = 90%-100%
    B = 80%-89%
    C = 70%-79%
    D = 60%-69%
    F = 59%->

Attendance
Each class will cover either terminology or one genetic condition. Because so much information is covered class attendance is important and mandatory. Three (3) absences will result in a student's grade being dropped one letter grade. More than three (3) absences will result in a conference with the instructor.

Written Report
Each student will be required to present a one page written report on a genetic condition of the student's choice. The report should not be longer than one page. It must have two (2) bibliography sources with one (1) source being from the World Wide Web. Reports will be graded on content, spelling, and grammar.

Class Participation
Classes will be presentation and discussion of Genetic conditions. Each class will be informal and discussion is encouraged.
