Overview
Increasing Genetics Content in Basic Nursing Curriculum On June 19, 1999, nursing faculty attending either the 1997 or 1998 Genetics Program for Nursing Faculty's two-week Genetics Summer Institute (GSI) returned for a two-day genetics workshop.
As part of the workshop, participants divided into three breakout sessions to address the following questions:
- What clinical outcomes are expected for nursing students in the area of genetics?
- What content is needed to achieve these outcomes?
- What strategies will assure that students receive this content?
- What type of preparation is needed by nursing faculty to implement these strategies?
Based on their intimate knowledge and experience with preparing nursing students for eventual clinical practice as RNs, participants generated recommendations for questions 1, 2, and 4.
Participants also reported successful strategies they used since the GSI to increase genetics content in their basic level nursing curricula.
The recommendations and strategies have been altered only for clarity purposes.
The recommendations and strategies are posted on the GPNF Web site as a resource to be used by all nursing faculty interested in increasing genetics content in their schools' curricula. Any other use of the recommendations and / or strategies is restricted and requires prior written permission from the GPNF director:
