Perspectives on Genetic Conditions - Sharing the Journey Video Clips
Sharing the Journey contains a compilation of video clips from Consumer Panels taped during Genetics Summer Institutes at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 1998, 2001 and 2003.
We use these video clips in our current 18 week Web-Based Genetics Institute* (WBGI). The nearly 400 nursing faculty, advanced practice nurses and nurses who have participated in a WBGI or GSI have raved about the Consumer Panel members’ willingness to share their life stories. A sampling of evaluation comments include: "wonderful, fabulous, humbling, touches the soul, incredible teaching resource!" Nursing Faculty have also used the video clips for educational purposes in their schools of nursing.
Each panelist was asked to spend approximately 15 minutes briefly describing their or, their loved one's genetic condition, their experiences with learning about the diagnosis, their experiences with health care professionals - particularly nurses, and their suggestions for what they would like for nurses to learn in their preparatory programs.
* The development, initial offerings and evaluation of the GSI and WBGI were supported by funds from the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI) Research Program of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Division of Nursing (DN), Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
