Overview
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine offer an interdisciplinary program tailored for post-baccalaureate students interested genetic counseling careers.
Helping individuals and families understand the genetic factors that influence their lives -- and to cope with the consequences -- is the unique role of genetic counselors.
They have specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. They enter the field from a variety of disciplines including biology, genetics, teaching, psychology, public health and social work.
As members of a health-care team, genetic counselors provide information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders, and to families and individuals who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.
Genetic counselors identify and interpret risk for these genetic disorders; explain inheritance patterns, prognosis and testing information; facilitate access to resources; and provide supportive counseling. They serve as educators and resource people for other health-care professionals and for the general public.
