New Graduate Nursing Internships

In this internship, new graduate nurses considering a future in pediatric emergency nursing can experience a wide range of practice options.

During the six-month program, interns work their preceptor's schedule, which includes rotating eight- or 12-hour shifts (day, evening, night and weekends). Interns must maintain a .8 full-time equivalent status during the internship. Upon completion, they continue in a formal, six-month mentorship program.

Clinical experiences include time in the Emergency Department, Operating Room, medical / surgical units, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, Transport Team, Ambulatory Care, Psychiatric Intake, University Air Care and at several of our outpatient locations.

The core curriculum includes weekly lectures, hands-on experiences, observations, Trauma Workshop, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (ENPC).

Interns learn about growth and development, epidemiology, triage, respiratory emergencies, injury prevention, pain assessment and management, behavioral emergencies, child abuse and neglect, stabilization and transport, intravascular access, environmental toxicological emergencies, neonatal emergencies, respiratory failure and shock, fluid / electrolyte / acid-base imbalances, trauma, medical emergencies, crisis intervention, legal and ethical considerations, performance improvement, clinical pathways, family-centered care and patient safety.
