Dennis Drotar Directs Center for Adherence and Self-Management
Dennis Drotar, PhD, has joined Cincinnati Children's as professor in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology and director of the new Center for Adherence and Self-Management.
The center will have both research and clinical components. The research component will focus on identifying the best methods to help families follow prescribed treatment (adherence) and to manage their treatment at home (self-management). The clinical component will focus on developing systems to embed the best adherence promotion interventions into clinical care to improve medical and quality of life outcomes.
Drotar comes to Cincinnati from Cleveland, Ohio, where he was chief of the Division of Behavioral Pediatrics and Psychology at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. A nationally recognized leader and teacher, Drotar is a past president of the Society of Pediatric Psychology (SPP) and is currently editor of the Journal of Pediatric Psychology. Among his many professional honors, Drotar has received the Distinguished Service Award, the Distinguished Research Contribution Award, and the Martin P. Levin Mentorship Award from the SPP.
Drotar's research focuses on understanding the factors that influence psychological outcomes of children and teens with chronic physical illness, including cystic fibrosis, diabetes, asthma and cancer. He is currently the principle investigator of several NIH-funded studies and is the author of more than 200 publications, including several books, most recently Psychological Interventions in Childhood Chronic Illness (2006).
"We are absolutely delighted to have recruited Denny Drotar to Cincinnati Children's," says Lori Stark, PhD, director of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology. "He is one of the most distinguished pediatric psychologists in America. His expertise and the established research programs he brings to Cincinnati will strengthen our division and will help us improve outcomes for children and families across the community."
