Prerequisites / Requirements

Following is a list of prerequisites and requirements for applicants interested in the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor Course at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Registration form and requirements may be downloaded below.

  1. Must provide a copy of your current Provider status in PALS
  2. Must complete required AHA Core Instructor Course packet prior to instructor course date.
  3. Must take and complete the written PALS exam (during this course) and score 84% or higher, without remediation
  4. Must have a letter of recommendation from a Training Center Faculty member. These can be from the Coordinator from which you took your PALS provider course.
  5. Should have prior teaching experience (especially in pediatrics)
  6. Must complete an instructor course application (below).

Once you have completed the instructor course, and you have completed all of the required paperwork, you will need to:

  1. Instruct at a minimum of 4 courses every two-year period
  2. Attend required instructor updates (occur once every 1-2 years)
  3. Maintain your provider status (usually completed at instructor updates (No. 2 above).

The course will include review of the PALS courses, both renewal and providers; teaching tactics; one presentation assignment for each instructor attending the course; and additional course information, regarding the PALS program at Cincinnati Children's.

PALS courses are run by the Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMS-C) Education staff at Cincinnati Children's.

Course Date / Location

Our next Instructor Course is Tuesday, December 11, 2007, from 8 am - 12 pm. The course will be held in the MERC Education Center.

Generally, instructor courses are held in the spring or fall. Please check back for future courses and announcements.

How to Register

To express your interest in taking the PALS Instructor Course, please complete the above mentioned requirements and submit your application. Specific requirements are listed, along with expectations. For further information, please contact the Training Center Office, 513-636-6992. When registering, we will need a copy of your current PALS Provider card.

The cost of the course is $65 (non-refundable less than two weeks prior to the course).

The course is open to the first 25 applicants. A minimum number of participants are required to hold the course; otherwise, the course will be canceled and registration fees will be refunded.

Course packets will not be mailed until registration is complete.
