Pediatric Primary Care Track

Frequent Questions

The following are frequently asked questions regarding the Primary Care Track of the Pediatric Residency Program at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Q: How many positions are available each year in the Primary Care Track?

A: Four to six

Q: What are the primary schedule differences in the schedule between the Primary Care Track and the general Pediatric Residency Program?

A: The Primary Care track differs as follows:

  1. A block month at the continuity site all three years of the program
  2. Two half days per week at the continuity site during all three years of the program (except the PL-I year; two half days per week only four months of the year)
  3. One less month each year on an inpatient service (bone marrow transplant rotation, one general pediatrics ward, one neonatal intensive care unit)
  4. One month of normal newborn at a community hospital as a PL-III replacing one month of neonatal ICU.
  5. Two weeks each of child psychology and private practice at the PL-III level

Q: What are my obligations after I complete the Primary Care Track of the Pediatric Residency Program? What if I change my mind and decide to enter a specialty?

A: While the expectation of a resident graduating from the Primary Care Track is that he or she will enter a career in primary care – either in a practice setting or a fellowship in general academic pediatrics – there is no contractual requirement to do so. People change their minds occasionally. The program is designed to prepare the resident for other careers in pediatrics, such specialty training, in that event.

Q: How are the primary care residents viewed by the residents in the general Pediatric Residency Program?

A: The program was designed to be relatively transparent with respect to its relationship with the general program. The primary care residents are fully integrated into the general program and enjoy the camaraderie and social interactions of the general program similar to the other special residency programs offered by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, such as the Triple Board Resident Training Program in psychiatry, the combined medicine-pediatrics program, the genetics program, and the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Program.
