First, Second and Third Years
The First Year
The primary care track's first year emphasizes a broad range of pediatric experiences in inpatient and outpatient settings. PL-1s are responsible for the care of patients admitted to them and take an active role in developing diagnostic and treatment plans.
While on call during your month of newborn care and five months of inpatient wards, you will be the first to evaluate and initiate therapy for patients admitted to your services. Senior residents are in-house and readily available to provide backup and answer questions you may have.
The outpatient experience during your first year is largely spent in a community private pediatric practice (two months), one of which is the continuity clinic site. During your block month at the continuity site, you will spend two half days a week in child psychology and eight half days seeing patients in the continuity clinic. Either this month or the block month spent at a private practice location are night-call free.
Throughout the first year, you will spend one or two afternoons each week at the continuity site. In addition, you will have rotations in the emergency department and the acute care, pediatric walk-in clinic.
A two-week rotation in child advocacy offers the opportunity to plan and implement a child advocacy project, which will continue as part of the continuity clinic experience over the three years of the program.
During the advocacy rotation, you will learn about the role of the pediatrician in the community, the importance of community-based agencies in health care and social issues, and how to manage child abuse and neglect cases, including long-term follow-up through the court system.
You will also experience multiple educational formats, which begin in the first year and continue throughout your residency. These include topic-based, formal presentations; problem-based case presentations; attending walk rounds; bedside teaching; and sessions which focus on skill development in important areas such as precepting/teaching and behavioral/developmental pediatrics.
The Second Year
The second year emphasizes continued development of clinical skills in both primary care and specialty areas. A full month is spent at the continuity clinic site, as well as two afternoons each week throughout the year, with limited night call.
The second year emphasizes continued development of clinical skills in both primary care and specialty areas. A full month is spent at the continuity clinic site, as well as two afternoons each week throughout the year, with limited night call.
During this block month at the continuity site, four half days are spent each week at four specialty clinics - chronic care, child abuse, neurology and asthma/allergy - and six half days are spent seeing patients in the continuity clinic.
Additional outpatient rotations include specialty clinics, the emergency department, developmental pediatrics and electives. Inpatient rotations include surgery, intensive care and specialty inpatient wards.
The Third Year
Continued emphasis is placed on outpatient medicine, with afternoon two each week at the continuity site and a one-month block at the continuity clinic site that includes four specialty clinics each week. A second block month is split between two weeks at a community private pediatrician's office and two weeks in child psychology / psychiatry. (The resident has the option of substituting an elective as an alternative to the second block month.)
