TJ Plageman

Hometown: Jenera, Ohio
Graduated from: Ohio State University
Year of entry: 2002
Research: I am studying the role of two related transcription factors (Tbx5 and Tbx20) during embryonic heart development. The goal is to determine novel downstream targets of these transcription factors and how they specifically function to direct proper heart development.

Why did you decide to come to Cincinnati?

I based my decision on the number of faculty studying several interesting and important topics in developmental biology, the collaborative environment of the Children's Hospital Research Foundation, and their apparent use of the latest technology to answer questions in developmental biology.

Why would you recommend this program to others?

There are several highly motivated and successful faculty who are great mentors and are eager to take on graduate students. The environment here is extremely supportive and collaborative, which enables students to overcome any difficulties they may encounter in their research. Most students in the program publish in prominent journals, which puts them in a position to further their career in academia.

What have you enjoyed most about the program?

This program has allowed me to develop as a scientist at my own pace and has not placed restrictions on me as I perform my research.
