The Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation (CCRF) is one of the leading pediatric research-intensive training programs in the country. In Fiscal Year 2004, external funding awarded to CCRF totaled over $115 million with a NIH funding base of greater than $81 million, placing the institution in the top 3 NIH funded pediatric training centers in the country.

The Department of Pediatrics is ranked in the top 4 graduate training programs in pediatrics in the country. Outstanding basic, translational and clinical research opportunities exists in multiple areas, including pulmonary and cardiovascular biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, immunobiology and innate immunity, stem cell biology/hematopoiesis/ leukemia biology, human genetics and gene therapy, the biology of gut development, cell signaling and bioinformatics. Strong academic advantages include a Graduate Programs in Molecular and Developmental Biology and Immunobiology and a number of outstanding seminar series which feature superb external speakers in a broad array of topics.

The institution also sponsors a number of exceptional internal grant mechanisms to support PhDs, MDs, and MD/PhDs during their fellowship and especially during the transition to junior faculty positions with a focus on research. An active grant program funds translational research projects and there is an emphasis on development of early phase human trials in pediatric diseases based on discovery science performed at CCRF. The institution has an outstanding track record in facilitating successful funding of individual training awards (K awards) for both MDs and PhDs and converting these awards to initial R01s.
