Overview

High school students who are interested in biomedical careers are invited to participate in the following programs at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

High School Science Symposium

The High School Science Symposium is a day-long event that allows local high school juniors and seniors to meet doctors and scientists who are finding cures for childhood diseases. During this program, students will learn about research projects and tour clinical and research facilities, emphasizing hands-on activities while visiting three areas of the Medical Center, including the Research Foundation.

High School Senior Summer Internship

The Summer Internship is an 8-week program over the summer where graduating high school seniors are paired with a mentor in one of the pediatric specialties at Cincinnati Children's. This internship is a paid, part-time position. Interns shadow their mentor on rounds and can participate in clinical or research projects and have the option of observing in other specialties (ER, OR, NICU, etc.) upon request.

Biomedical Research Internship for Minority Students (BRIMS) Program

Cincinnati Children's is introducing the new Biomedical Research Internship for Minority Students (BRIMS) program funded through the Charlotte R Schmidlapp Center for Career Development in which 5 outstanding minority students will be paired with a research mentor to pursue a 9-week full time basic science, translational or clinical biomedical research project during the summer. In addition to lab work, students will participate in weekly networking luncheons and shadowing opportunities with minority faculty in several areas of the hospital, from surgery to administration. This program is open to high achieving graduating high school seniors and college freshmen from the Cincinnati tri-state area only.

Summer for Sickle Cell Science Program

The Sickle Cell Center at Cincinnati Children’s runs a full time NIH funded Summer for Sickle Cell Science Program for 3 high school juniors or seniors. The students work full time for 8 weeks on a research project and attend the weekly luncheons with the Summer Internship students.

School’s Out Volunteer Program at Cincinnati Children's

Cincinnati Children’s Volunteer Services Department welcomes teen volunteers each summer in our School’s Out program. Teen volunteers help in areas such as activity centers and outpatient clinics in addition to providing clerical support in departments throughout the hospital, both at the main campus and at our neighborhood locations. We ask our summer volunteers, who must be at least 15 years old by June 1st, to make a weekly commitment of two to three hours and plan to miss no more than two scheduled shifts over the course of the summer.

Interested high school students should call the Volunteer Services office at 513-636-4396 to request an application. We will begin taking names on March 1, 2010 and the program tends to fill up quickly. Those interested in volunteering at the Liberty Campus or at our other neighborhood locations should call Megan McCafferty at 513-803-9302.

Learn more about volunteering opportunities at Cincinnati Children's by visiting the Volunteer Services website (scroll to the bottom of the page to find the required forms for high school and college students).
