Curriculum
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program at Cincinnati Children’s is a two-year program that trains residents to fully evaluate children and adolescents for psychiatric disorders, and to develop and implement comprehensive treatment plans.
First Year
Residents complete all requirements for inpatient psychiatry, consultation liaison psychiatry and chemical dependency treatment during the first year of the training program. The emphasis during this initial year is on the evaluation and management of children and adolescents presenting in the acute phase. Residents treat patients newly diagnosed with severe psychopathology requiring hospitalization, as well as those with chronic disorders who present in crisis.
Throughout the first year, residents learn about and interact with community systems of care, including case-management agencies, children’s protective services and managed-care providers.
Second Year
The second year of training is focused on the longitudinal outpatient care of children and adolescents. Senior residents see patients at several training sites, and are exposed to a variety of practice settings including community mental health clinics, psychopharmacology clinics and private practice type care.
Throughout the two-year training program, residents attend seminars and conferences that complement their clinical activities. These include courses on normal development, psychopathology, psychotherapy, psychopharmacology and social and cultural aspects of child and adolescent psychiatry. Additional block rotations include child neurology, school consultation and forensic child and adolescent psychiatry.
