Sleep Medicine Fellowship
The sleep medicine fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s is an ACGME-approved graduate medical training program with strong emphasis on clinical and research aspects of the specialty. The combined training program utilizes resources from Cincinnati Children’s, the University Of Cincinnati School Of Medicine and the Veterans Hospital of Cincinnati. The fellowship is a two-year program, with ACGME accreditation for the first (clinical) year. We offer fellows diverse clinical training in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and focus extensively on the management of pediatric and adult patients with a variety of sleep disorders, such as:
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Central sleep apnea
- Narcolepsy
- Sleep disorder breathing secondary to chronic medical conditions
- Behavioral and psychological sleep disorders
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Parasomnias
- Insomnia
- Sleepwalking
- Periodic limb movement disorder and restless leg syndrome
Overview
This is a one year fellowship predominantly dedicated to acquiring the knowledge and experience in clinical sleep medicine. Two weeks of the first year are dedicated to research. During this period, fellows identify the areas of research they will pursue during the second year. The first-year curriculum also includes formal rotations in neurophysiology, ENT and psychiatry.
The second year of study is optional, non-accredited, and devoted to research. However, fellows will attend one outpatient clinic per month to maintain their clinical skills. In addition, fellows interpret sleep studies for four hours per month.
Objectives
The sleep medicine fellowship is designed to provide excellent clinical training in pediatric sleep medicine and to lay a foundation for physicians who plan to pursue an academic career in this subspecialty. The program leads to subspecialty certification in sleep medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics, American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Otolaryngology.
Qualifications
Applicants must have an MD or DO from an accredited institution and must have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in pediatrics, neurology, internal medicine or psychiatry. Candidates must also be active candidates for certification or be certified by the corresponding American board. Applicants must be eligible for licensure by the State Medical Board of Ohio. Candidates with prior training in pediatric or adult pulmonary medicine are preferred.
