Flexible Bronchoscopy

Pediatric pulmonologists and other pediatric subspecialists with interest are invited to attend. Registration is limited to 48 physicians. Endoscopy assistants may attend the course by special arrangement; please contact the course director, Robert Wood, MD, PhD (robertE.wood@cchmc.org) for information about the assistant’s program.

The course is an intensive four-day program involving lectures, demonstrations, hands-on laboratory exercises in model systems, video laboratories, which review normal and abnormal endoscopic findings, and a BAL lab. The course is designed to give a comprehensive introduction to pediatric bronchology and assumes no previous endoscopic experience. During the laboratory sessions, endoscopy assistants will have their own programs.

Day 2

• Anesthesia / sedation for flexible bronchoscopy
• The upper airways – normal and abnormal findings
• Rigid bronchoscopy – comparison of indications and techniques

Day 3

• Organizing and operating a bronchoscopy program and the role of the assistants
• Bronchoalveolar lavage – indications and technique
• Special endoscopic techniques (biopsy, brushing, bronchoscopic intubation, etc.)
• Bronchoscopy in the pediatric and neonatal intensive care units
• Laboratory
• Models lab 3
• Video lab 3 – the upper airways

Day 4

• Bronchoalveolar lavage – findings and interpretation
• Complications of bronchoscopy
• The education of a bronchoscopist

This course does not, by itself, qualify anyone to independently perform endoscopic procedures on patients. This course is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of pediatric flexible bronchoscopy. Considerable further training and experience will be required of those who are not already qualified for such practice within their own institutions.
