Pediatric Residency Program

  • Global Health Track

The comprehensive Global Child Health Educational Program is designed to empower our residents to make a difference for all children, especially poor and underserved children. The world is a smaller place in the 21st century, and medical students across the United States have traveled and experienced more of our world, including the developing world, than most other generations. They have been moved by tragedies and inequities and want to make a difference. Cincinnati Children’s has an opportunity to be the training institution that will lead this group of future leaders and prepare them to effect change for all children, especially the under-served children in our nation and throughout the world.

The comprehensive Global Child Health Educational Program is designed to empower our residents to make a difference for all children, especially poor and underserved children. The program offers a structured international experience for our residents as well as a Global Child Health Track for residents who are passionate about global health.

+ The Enhanced Global Child Health Resident Experience

From the Americas to Africa to Asia, our residents have worked in clinics and hospitals across the globe. We have established educational and research relationships at many sites and have made it a priority to promote the exchange of ideas between participating institutions. Our residents at Cincinnati Children’s have the opportunity to be immersed in a one-month global health experience. To support our residents in these global experiences, the Global Child Health Program provides residents with:

    • Partnership with a number of global health sites
    • Faculty and administrative support
    • Financial support

This rotation will encourage residents to view the world differently after their global health experience. It will help them better understand and contribute to the reversal of health inequities in our country and abroad. Residents intending to conduct overseas work should submit an application listing the site as well as goals, objectives and projected costs prior to being approved for additional funding beyond the book / conference fund.

+ The Three-Year Global Child Health Residency Track

The Global Child Health Residency Track is designed to engage and inspire residents to seek post-residency opportunities and training in the field of global health. As a participant in the Global Health Track, your residency will be tailored to provide ample opportunities to go abroad while equipping you with the skills to design, create, build and sustain viable international programs and become leaders in the field of global health medicine.

Our program is fully integrated into the categorical pediatric residency program. As a track resident, you will complete your pediatric residency in the standard three years, (and meet all the existing ABP and ACGME requirements) but will participate in at least two global health rotations. You will also take part in the Global Child Health curriculum, journal clubs and complete a global health project. These residents will be mentored and, upon completion of the track, will receive a certificate of achievement.

Our global health program has six target sites in the United States and abroad where our faculty, fellows and residents pursue planned or ongoing projects. As a track resident, you are permitted to participate in other international opportunities beyond our six target sites that fit your personal interest and career goals.
