Orthopaedic Surgery Residency

Residents are expected to complete a research project or case study during their rotation. Our group consists of nine full-time pediatric orthopedic surgeons, two of whom are members of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics. Cincinnati Children’s is ranked #1 in in the nation among Honor Roll hospitals in the U.S. News and World Report 2023-24 Best Children’s Hospitals. The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery ranks as a top 3 program of it's kind in the nation.

Rotations run two to six months. Our CORE Curriculum is built around our six-month rotators. We have a busy education schedule, which includes two didactic lectures a week, weekly pre- and post-op X-ray conference as well as an Outcomes Conference and Mortality and Morbidity conference once a month, research meetings, monthly Journal Club, and quarterly professor visits, which include Spine and Hand Days with a combined radiology / ortho / pathology conference. In the interest of preparing orthopedic residents for their boards, we have an oral practical exam quarterly for their educational benefit.

Residents are expected to complete a research project or case study during their rotation. They work with our research associates, learn about IRB processes and have many resources available to collect their data and direct them in their research endeavors. We consider the research portion to be one of the most important aspects of the rotation.

Residents get exposure to a wide range of pediatric orthopaedic diagnoses as we average around 130 emergency room consults per month and approximately 3,100 outpatient clinic visits per month. Past residents have averaged 20 OR cases per month.

All residents are given books as part of their education free of charge: Green and Swiontkowski Skeletal Trauma in Children, 3rd Edition, and Rockwood and Wilkins’ Fractures in Children. We pay for the residents’ daily parking cost at the hospital, and give them assistance with food expenses when they are on-call. We also provide free housing accommodations in one of our fully furnished apartments, which are just five minutes from the hospital.
