Undergraduate Institution: North Carolina Wesleyan College, Rocky Mount, North Carolina
After completing my undergraduate degree, I spent several years conducting oncology research for a contract research organization. After several promotions and title changes, I realized I wanted to have more control over the science I conduced and therefore decided to continue my education. I also knew I had a specific interest in translational research, due to my previous work conducting patient derived xenograft work.
Once I made my decision to pursue graduate school, I spent close to a year looking at programs all over the United States in order to find a program that would not only fit my research interests, but prepare me for the next step in my career. I found the Molecular and Developmental Biology program after reading several research papers that were produced by faculty members affiliated with the program and tracing these papers back to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Once I looked at the program on the internet, I was impressed by the faculty, the students, and the vast opportunities at CCHMC.
After I applied, I realized this program was very different from other programs I had looked at previously. I was first impressed by the correspondence of faculty members and the program director as I went through the application, interview, and post interview process. I realized these individuals are personally invested in the success of their students and genuinely want to see their students succeed.
Another impressive aspect of the program is the diversity of the developmental research conducted throughout the department. Students have an opportunity to explore many fascinating aspects of developmental biology before choosing a lab. The skills acquired through this process are invaluable!
I believe the Molecular and Developmental Biology Program will best give me the tools to reach my next career goals. The environment here at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is giving me the tools to conduct thoughtful, insightful research here and beyond.
