Messer Walks its Talk

Messer Construction Co.’s tagline ‘We Are Building’ means far more to its employees than just construction.

“The company’s philosophy is about supporting and helping build our communities,” says Jerry Noble, a senior project executive with Messer. “People who work on our projects in Cincinnati also live in Cincinnati and want to help make it a better place.”

This philosophy has been a major driving force behind Messer’s involvement in Cincinnati Walks for Kids – the annual fundraising walk for Cincinnati Children’s – since it began in 2006. After two years as an event sponsor, a team of employees met and decided they wanted to do more.

“We wanted to have a strong presence at the walk and really step up our level of support,” Jerry says.

Project Manager David Habel volunteered to lead the group’s efforts. For the past few years, David and his committee have hosted various events leading up to the walk to help raise more money. For example, they have planned ice cream socials, cornhole tournaments and cookouts. Messer’s subcontractors have also played a pivotal role in the success of Messer’s walk team and have gone above and beyond to support the event.

“The first year when we really stepped it up, I think we tripled the amount of money we raised,” David says.

Last year, Messer had 61 walkers on its team and raised over $19,000, ranking second among the hundreds of teams at the event.

“You read about all the great things Cincinnati Children’s is doing, and knowing that you have a small amount to do with that is just very rewarding,” Jerry says.

For many Messer employees, including David and Jerry, Cincinnati Children’s has impacted them personally. Some were treated at the medical center when they were a child or have children who have been treated here.

“It is about giving back, and realizing that Cincinnati Children’s needs things like the walk in order to keep moving forward and caring for our kids in
the future. It is not going to happen by itself,” Jerry says.
