Carboplatin (Paraplatin)

What is carboplatin?

Carboplatin is a medicine used to treat certain types of cancer. (Examples include: brain tumors, neuroblastoma, sarcomas.)

How to take this medication

Carboplatin will be given by IV infusion in the hospital.

Special Instructions

The dose of carboplatin may need to be adjusted based on how well your child's kidneys are working.

Hearing may be affected by this medication. Therefore, hearing tests will be performed prior to treatment with this medication and at specified intervals during treatment.

Blood tests will be performed to monitor the amount of potassium, calcium and magnesium in your child's blood. Supplements may be required to replace these electrolytes.

Side effects

More common effects:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bone marrow depression
  • Mineral (Magnesium, potassium, calcium) and fluid imbalance
  • Loss of hearing or ringing in the ears
  • Decreased kidney or liver function
  • Hair loss
  • Tingling sensations in the arms or legs
  • Metallic taste

Warning signs

Call your child's doctor immediately if your child develops:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Ringing in the ears
