Flecainide

What is flecainide?

Flecainide (Tambocor®) is an antiarrhythmic used to treat certain heart conditions. It is used to treat and / or prevent abnormal rhythms or beats of the heart. It may be taken in a tablet or your pharmacist may be able to make it a liquid.

Special Instructions

  • Do not discontinue this medication without talking to your child's doctor.
  • Because flecainide may interact with other medications, tell the doctor or pharmacist about other prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications your child is taking.
  • This medication may be taken with or without food.
  • In infants, dairy products and formula / feedings should be given at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after the dose. You may want to discuss this topic with your child's doctor.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle / package.
  • If too much medication is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 513-636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.

If a Dose is Missed

For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and/or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.


Side Effects

Call your child's doctor if the following effects continue or are bothersome:

  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Nervousness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea and / or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Pale stools

Warning Signs

Call your child's doctor immediately if your child develops:

  • Chest pain
  • Palpitations
  • Swelling in hand or feet
  • Dizziness
  • Severe diarrhea or vomiting
  • Rash
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
  • Problems with vision
  • Shortness of breath
