What is haloperidol?

 

Haloperidol (Haldol") is used to treat nervous, mental and emotional conditions. It may be given as a tablet, liquid, or by injection.

Special Instructions

  • Give this medication only as directed, and do not stop unless directed to stop by your child's doctor.
  • Notify your child's doctor of any other medications your child is taking.
  • It is best to avoid alcoholic beverages or over the counter medications that contain alcohol while taking this medication.
  • If this medication upsets your child's stomach, it may be taken with food or milk. If taking the liquid form, mix in water or drinks such as orange juice, tomato juice, or cola and take right away. Do not mix in tea or coffee.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle/package.
  • If too much medication is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 513-636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222, or call your child's doctor immediately.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.

If a Dose is Missed

For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and/or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.

Side Effects

Call your child's doctor if the following effects continue or are bothersome:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Headaches

Warning Signs

Call your child's doctor immediately if any of the following occurs:

  • Convulsions
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Trouble urinating
  • Muscle spasms in face, neck, arms
  • Very pale skin
  • Extreme changes in body temperature
