What is hydroxyurea?
Hydroxyurea is a drug used to treat a variety of disorders including certain types of cancer, sickle cell disease and blood diseases. It is available as a capsule.
Special Instructions
- If your child is unable to take the capsule whole, the capsule may be opened and the contents mixed with water if taken immediately. Some powder may float on the surface of the water, but that is just filler from the capsule.
- You should wear gloves when handling this medicine or when changing your child's diaper while he/she is taking this medicine.
- Store medication at room temperature away from moisture and sunlight. Do not refrigerate. Do not store in the bathroom.
- Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle/package.
- If too much medicine is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 513-636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222, or call your child's doctor immediately.
- Keep this medication out of the reach of children.

Side effects
Contact your child's doctor if symptoms persist or become bothersome:
- Sore throat / mouth or difficulty swallowing
- Abdominal pain or constipation

Warning signs
Call your child's doctor immediately if your child develops:
- Severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Dizziness, confusion
- Rash
- Fever
- Blood in urine or stools
- Black tarry stools
- Bleeding or easy bruising
