Linezolid

(Lin-a-zo-lid)

Linezolid (Zyvox") is a medicine used to treat bacterial infections. It is available as tablets, liquid and injection.

Special Instructions

  • Linezolid may be taken with or without food
  • Do not skip doses or stop therapy unless directed by a physician
  • Do not double up on doses
  • Store liquid at room temperature (expires 21 days from preparation)
  • Let your physician know if your child has high blood pressure or is taking antidepressants
  • Foods with large amounts of tyramine should be avoided such as cheese, dried meats, sauerkraut, yeasts, soy sauce, beer / wine and liver
  • Shake liquid well, then use a medication measuring spoon to get the correct dose
  • It is best to take linezolid at the same time each day
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle / package
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children

Missed Dose

For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and/or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.

Side Effects

Common side effects include rash, headache and stomach upset such as nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

More serious side effects include a drop in blood cell count.

If your child is also taking an antidepressant, he/she may experience fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, or confusion.

Warning Signs

Call your child's doctor if:

  1. Your child develops a rash.
  2. Your child has a fast heartbeat, measured high blood pressure or experiences confusion/agitation while taking this medication. If it is severe, go to the emergency room.

Additional Information

Your child's doctor may want to draw blood each week to monitor for side effects (such as low blood cell counts). It is important to have this blood work done.
