Metolazone

What is metolazone?

Metolazone (Zaroxolyn") belongs to a class of medicines known as thiazide diuretics. It is used to treat high blood pressure or patients with kidney dysfunction. It is available as a tablet or your pharmacist may be able to make a liquid.


Special Instructions

  • Give this medication only as directed, and do not stop unless directed to stop by your child's doctor.
  • Make sure your child's doctor knows if your child has diabetes before giving this medication.
  • Consult the doctor or pharmacist before giving any other prescription drug or over-the-counter (OTC) drug.
  • Take this medicine during the day to help prevent having to get up at night to urinate.
  • Avoid excessive exposure to the sun. Use sunscreen.
  • May be taken with food if it upsets your child's stomach.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle/package.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.
  • If too much medication is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 513-636-5111 or 1-900-222-1212, or call your child's doctor immediately.

If a Dose is Missed

For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and/or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.

Side Effects

Call your child's doctor if the following effects continue or are bothersome:
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased thirst
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting

Warning Signs

Call your child's doctor immediately if any of the following occur:
  • Rash
  • Excessive urine
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Severe nausea or vomiting
  • Severe dizziness or passing out
