Metoprolol

What is metoprolol?

Metoprolol (Lopressor", Toprol XL") is in a class of drugs known as beta-blockers. It is used to treat high blood pressure, fast heartbeat, chest pain, migraine headache and tremors. It can be given as an injection, tablet, or your pharmacist may be able to make a liquid.

Special Instructions

  • Give this medicine only as told by the doctor, and do not stop unless told to stop by your child's doctor.
  • Ask the doctor or pharmacist before giving any over-the-counter (OTC) drugs.
  • Make sure your child's doctor knows if your child has asthma or diabetes before giving this medicine.
  • Take the same time each day with food.
  • Do not chew, break or crush the extended release tablets.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle/package.
  • If too much medicine is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 513-636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222, or call your child's doctor right away.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.

If a Dose is Missed

For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and/or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.

Common Side Effects

Call your child's doctor if the following effects continue or are bothersome:
  • Feeling dizzy or tired
  • Feeling confused
  • Cold hands or feet
  • Sleep trouble

Warning Signs

Call your child's doctor right away if your child has trouble breathing, has a severe headache, weight gain or skin rash.
