Naproxen

What is naproxen?

Naproxen (Naprosyn") is a medicine that is used to relieve pain and headaches, and to decrease fever and inflammation, or swelling. It is available in tablet and liquid form.

Special instructions

  • Do not give more of this medication than recommended by your child's doctor.
  • If your child's symptoms persist or if they become worse, contact your child's doctor.
  • Taking this medication with food may decrease stomach upset.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle/package.
  • Never use a household teaspoon to measure your child's dose. Use the measuring device that came with the product. If this is not available, get dosing syringes, a medicine dropper, a medicine spoon, or dosing cup from your pharmacist.
  • Shake the liquid formulation well before use.
  • Store away from heat or direct light.
  • Do not store in the bathroom medicine cabinet.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.
  • If too much medicine is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 513-636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222, or call your child's doctor immediately.

If a dose is missed

For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and/or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.

Side effects

Contact your child's doctor if symptoms persist or become bothersome:
  • Heartburn or nausea
  • Upset stomach

Warning signs

Call your child's doctor immediately if your child develops:
  • Rash or hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Severe stomach pains
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Visual disturbances
