Nicardipine

What is nicardipine?

Nicardipine (Cardene") is part of a class of medications called calcium channel blockers. It is used to treat high blood pressure, irregular heart beat, other conditions that affect the heart, or migraine headaches. It can be given as a capsule, sustained release capsule, or by injection.

Special Instructions

  • Give only as directed. Do not stop giving the medicine unless the doctor tells you to stop.
  • Talk to your child's doctor or pharmacist before giving any other medications, prescription or over-the-counter (OTC).
  • Swallow long-acting tablets whole. Do no chew or crush.
  • Take sustained release capsules with food.
  • Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle/package.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.
  • If too much medicine is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC) 513-636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222, or call your child's doctor immediately.

If a Dose is Missed

For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and/or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.

Side Effects

Call your child's doctor if the following effects continue or are bothersome:
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Flushed skin

Warning Signs

Call the doctor right away if any of the following occurs:
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling of hands or feet
  • Extreme dizziness or fainting
  • Nausea or vomiting
