Syrup of Ipecac

What is syrup of Ipecac?

Syrup of Ipecac is used to cause vomiting in an emergency. It is used when certain types of poisons are taken.

Special Instructions

  • Always call your child's doctor or the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 1-800-222-1222 or 513-636-5111, before giving syrup of ipecac.
  • Always call your child's doctor or the DPIC if any kind ingestion of poisoning is suspected.
  • It is dangerous to give Syrup of Ipecac with some types of poisons. Do not give unless instructed by your child's doctor or the poison control center (DPIC).
  • Do not give Syrup of Ipecac to your child if they are unconscious or very sleepy.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.
  • If vomiting does not occur after the second dose go immediately to the emergency room.

Side Effects

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea

Warning Signs

Report any of the following symptoms to your child's doctor or the emergency room doctor or the poison control center:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Stomach cramps, pain
  • Vomiting for more than 30 minutes
  • Fast or irregular heart beat
  • Stiff muscles in the neck, arms, or legs
  • Unusual tiredness or weakness
