What is spironolactone?

Spironolactone (Aldactone") belongs to a class of medicines known as diuretics. This medication acts on the kidneys to increase the amount of urine that is made. It removes water from the body and can help treat conditions involving the heart. It is available as a tablet or your pharmacist may be able to make a liquid.

Special Instructions

  • Talk with your child's doctor or pharmacist before giving any other prescription medicines or any over-the-counter (OTC) medicines.
  • Take this medicine as instructed. Do not stop this medicine unless your child's doctor tells you to.
  • Shake the liquid before giving. Store the liquid in the refrigerator.
  • Do not store the tablets in the bathroom.
  • Do not use a salt-substitute or other foods high in potassium without first talking with your child's doctor.
  • Do not use after the expiration date on the bottle / package.
  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.
  • If too much medication is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center at (513) 636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222, or call your child's doctor immediately.

Side Effects

Call your child's doctor if the following effects continue or are bothersome:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Upset stomach

Warning Signs

Call your child's doctor if any of the following occur:

  • Rash
  • Heart racing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe nausea or vomiting
