Sucralfate

What is sucralfate?
This medicine is a protective agent used to treat or prevent ulcers in the esophagus or the stomach. It can be given as a tablet or as a liquid.
How is this medicine given?
- It is best to take on an empty stomach. Give 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
- Shake the liquid well before each use.
- Antacids may be taken 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after taking sucralfate.
- Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of a number of other medicines. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications.
- Keep it at room temperature, away from light and heat. Do not freeze the oral liquid.
- If too much medicine is taken by accident, call the Drug and Poison Information Center (DPIC), 513-636-5111 or 1-800-222-1222, or call your child's doctor right away.
- Keep out of reach of children.
What do I do if my child misses a dose?
For any medication information related to your child's dosing schedule and / or missed doses, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication.
What are the side effects of this medicine?
- Constipation
- Mild stomach cramps or diarrhea
- Upset stomach or gas
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
When should I call my child's doctor?
- If your child has a rash, hives, or itching
- If your child has swelling of the faceor mouth, or difficulty breathing
