All Terrain Vehicle Safety

From 1991 through December 2006, Children's Hospital Medical Center of Cincinnati admitted 288 patients for injuries related to all-terrain vehicle (ATV) accidents.

During this fourteen-year period,

  • 23 patients (8 percent) were between 1 and 4 years of age;
  • 67 patients (23 percent) were between 5 and 9 years of age;
  • 145 patients (50 percent) were between 10 and 14 years of age;
  • 52 patients (18 percent) were between 15 and 19 years of age;
  • one person (1 percent) was over 20 years of age.

Among the Cincinnati Children's patients treated for ATV injuries, 78 percent were male; 22 percent were female.
