Possible Complications

Complications Following Kidney Transplantation

While rejection and infection are the most common problems following kidney transplantation, other complications may also occur:

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Hypertension is very common after kidney transplant as it is a side effect of some of the immunosuppressant medications that you will be taking. The Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center will monitor your blood pressure very carefully at your child's follow-up visits, and it is likely that your child will need to take one or more blood pressure medications.

Medication Side Effect Complications

Most other post-transplant complications are related to side effects of immunosuppressant medications and may necessitate additional medications to treat them if they occur.

These other post-transplant complications include:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Osteoporosis
  • Hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and triglyceride)

The development of these medication side-effect complications depend on which medications you are taking.
