Other Kidney Transplant Medications
Along with your immunosuppressant and anti-infection medications, the Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center may prescribe at least one blood pressure medication.
In addition to controlling high blood pressure, which is common after transplant, some blood pressure medications protect the transplanted kidney from potentially damaging side effects of other medications your child will be taking.
A phosphorus supplement is also usually necessary in the initial weeks to months after transplant.
Additional medications may be necessary to treat side effects of other medications. These medications are generally temporary and will depend on the occurrence and severity of side effects. Some examples may include:
- Antacids, such as Zantac or Prilosec, for stomach irritation
- Diuretics (water pills), such as furosemide (Lasix) or chlorothiazide (Diuril), for fluid retention
- Insulin, if your child's blood sugar becomes too elevated
