Communication During the Liver Transplant Procedure

After your child leaves the holding room and goes into the operating room, you and your family will wait in the surgery waiting area. We encourage you to bring books, small games, snacks or other items that will help you during the waiting time.

The liver transplant coordinator will come out to talk with you several times during the liver transplant surgery to give you updates on how your child is doing.

The operation can last anywhere from six to 12 hours.

After the surgery is completed, the transplant surgeons will come to the surgical waiting area and talk with your family.

While the surgical team is meeting with you to update you on the surgery and answer your questions, your child will be taken to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

Give the PICU nurses and doctors about 1½ hours to get your child comfortable and safe before you visit.
