Working with gardening tools in the yard can be especially dangerous. "String weed trimmers and lawn mowers often cause the worst problems. They kick up dirt and germs from the soil that can cause a bad infection in addition to the injury to the eye or eyelid. The particles are coming from the soil, which can contain animal feces," Constance West, M.D., a pediatric ophthalmologist at Cincinnati Children'sHospital Medical Center says. "Vision and even an eye can be lost to infections caused by this type of debris."
