Closing the Gap Between Bench and Bedside
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has evolved its Heart Center into the Heart Institute, the first such endeavor in pediatric cardiology, designed to more fully integrate our clinical and research strengths for better patient care.
Led by Jeffrey Robbins, PhD, Cincinnati Children's Heart Institute breaks down silos between research and clinical teams, creating an environment where physicians, nurses and other clinical staff interact and collaborate on a daily basis with basic and translational researchers. It merges the diverse activities of clinical care, research, education, operations and outcomes improvement. The structure and the business processes will not only encourage but drive the exchange of information between bench and bedside.
Within the Heart Institute, researchers and physicians will work together to define new disease pathways and develop new treatments for pediatric cardiovascular disease.
The Heart Institute is the first of several institutes slated to be introduced over the next few years, and it underscores Cincinnati Children’s commitment to transforming outcomes in pediatric health. This initiative will strengthen Cincinnati Children’s ability to compete for funding opportunities that demand more integrated approaches to treatment and research. It will also strengthen the ability of Cincinnati Children’s to recruit world-class clinical and research leaders and train the next generation of pediatric specialists.
